evaluation the early effects of single high dose radioiodine therapy on lacrimal gland function
Authors
abstract
background: the therapeutic administration of 131i for thyroid remnant ablation and for metastases comes up with some adverse effects. this study was conducted to investigate whether single high dose radioiodine therapy affects lacrimal gland functions or not. materials and methods: seventy-eight eyes of 39 patients, who were diagnosed as differentiated thyroid carcinoma, were objectively tested with schiermer’s test and tear film break-up time test before and 1 and 6 months after high dose (≥ 3700 mbq) 131i therapy. results: the median values of pre-treatment schiermer’s test were 10.00 mm and 9.60 mm for right and left eyes, respectively. at the post-treatment first and sixth months, no significant change was observed in the median values of schiermer’s test in both eyes (p= 0.189 and p=0.085, respectively, friedman test). the median values of pre-treatment tear film break-up time test were 9.15 sn and 9.20 sn for right and left eyes, respectively. the median values of post-treatment tear film break-up times reduced at first and sixth months and the difference between the pre-treatment and post-treatment values were significant in both eyes (p=0.020 and p=0.022 for right and left eyes, respectively, friedman test). conclusion: impairment of goblet cell function occurs early after administration of single high dose 131i application. however, reduction in tear secretion from lacrimal gland is not observed.

full textChanges in salivary gland function following radioiodine therapy of thyroid diseases: A comparison of high-dose therapy for thyroid cancer and low-dose therapy for benign thyroid disease
Introduction: High-dose radioactive iodine therapy in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) may adversely affect the salivary gland function. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of radioactive iodine (RAI) with dose of 100 mCi in DTC patients compared to lower doses of less than 30 mCi in hyperthyroid cases. Methods: Fifty four patients (13 men and 41 women) age: 42.3±14.3 (21-71) years w...
full textRadioiodine therapy effects on salivary gland function in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer [Persian]
Salivary gland involvement is one of the radioiodine therapy complications. Salivary gland scintigraphy in quantitative mode can accurately evaluate salivary gland function. Methods: Salivary gland scintigraphy was performed with Tc-99m Pertechnetate, at the time of iodine therapy as a basic study and then 3 weeks and 3 months afterwards. Ejection Fraction (EF) of parotid and submandibula...
full textSalivary and lacrimal gland dysfunction (sicca syndrome) after radioiodine therapy.
UNLABELLED Salivary gland dysfunction has been described in patients undergoing radioiodine therapy but associated lacrimal gland dysfunction (sicca syndrome) has never been reported. We conducted a prospective cohort study with follow-up for up to 3 y in a tertiary care university center to determine the prevalence of sicca syndrome in patients after high-dose radioiodine treatment. METHODS ...
